Featured Local Business: Emergency Medical Care

We recently met with father & son team Dr. Steve Okrahvi and Michael Okrahvi, at Emergency Medical Care also known as EMC.

EMC provides efficient urgent care to neighbors in Tribeca, Battery Park City, and Hell’s Kitchen, 24 hours a day.  The best part about EMC is the short wait.  You’re guaranteed to see a doctor in 15 minutes.  Compare that to the average 4-hour wait in the emergency room.

We have the same resources as an ER.  We take care of all emergencies.

Michael Okrahvi

But while speed and efficiency is a definitive benefit, equally noteworthy is Dr. Okhravi’s approach to healthcare as it relates to his neighborhood, Tribeca.

The mission is to provide quality care you can trust. This is not about becoming a mega-center.  This is for the neighborhood.

Dr. Steve Okrahvi

We’re excited to partner with EMC and help spread the word about their services to the neighborhood.  As a local family-run business who truly cares about providing qualified and compassionate care to neighbors, we highly recommend them!

In the coming weeks, we’ll be releasing short video clips of our conversation with EMC.  We hope you check back regularly to learn more about them.  And if you’d like to participate in our discussion with EMC just use Twitter #ERAlternative.  You could also email me at rechelle@romio.com - I would love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, and ideas!

Lastly, we hope you’ll help spread the word about EMC too by following them on Romio.  And if you have been to EMC, would you put in a good word and recommend them on Romio?

Moms Deserve Pampering!

Our recent event on Saturday, May 4th at the Washington Jefferson Hotel was a celebration of moms and all that they do for us.  Our afternoon was filled with great conversation, petit fours, and some pampering.

image

Stephanie Dua, founder & CEO of Homer graced us with her presence as moderator.  Homer is a handcrafted early learning experience focused on building literacy for 3 to 9 year olds through a beautiful cutting-edge app for iPad.  Stay tuned for their release in the coming weeks!

Our discussion focused on how moms raise their family while still pursuing their professional aspirations.  As Pam Kirkbride from Triple Threat Mommy put it:

The question of the century is:
How do you do it all and not feel guilty?

One of our featured moms, Debbie Silverstein, General Manager of the Washington Jefferson Hotel, had a great response.

You have to define what your ‘all’ is and it has to be realistic.

A couple of other interesting comments on guilt.  We love that the conversation was happening online too!

image

So what’s the the takeaway?  From a banging mom, who’s raising a gentleman, taking the MCATs and living a full NYC life:

image

So in a nutshell, moms do it all.  That’s no secret.  But while moms readily gave their opinion on how they manage everything & multi-task, the hardest question was surprisingly:

If you could have 15 minutes of alone time each day - what would you do?

The room fell silent.  The reality is, moms are so busy running around and taking care of business, they seldom have a minute to themselves, let alone 15!  One mom joked that she would just breathe!

image

Needless to say, it was a real pleasure for us to pamper moms for a few minutes with a manicure, facial, and of course some champagne!

image

But why stop there?  Let’s continue the celebration because every mom deserves some pampering.  So we’re very excited to say that we will be giving away one night to the Washington Jefferson Hotel!

We’re all about connecting people with recommendations from their friends and other locals.  Because it’s the recommendation from people you trust that matter most.  You would never hire your babysitter or nanny from Craig’s List - but you would ask another mom, a neighbor, or a friend for a recommendation.  The point is:

It takes a village to raise a child.  Recommend the people and businesses you trust on Romio for a chance to win a free night at the WJ Hotel!

Lastly, we want to give a BIG THANK YOU to the following local businesses who were a part of our event.  We hope you enjoyed the services, treats, and little gifts and recommend them on Romio so others can find them too!

New York Burger Week: Off-Menu Burger Bash at 67 Burger

image

For New York Burger Week, we were invited by our local burger expert, Burger Conquest, to attend the off-menu burger bash at Park Slope’s 67 Burger this past Sunday. It was $45 for two people and included 4 different off-menu burger creations from Chef Jeff Maslanka, an order of fries, and 2 draft beers from Empire Brewing Company (brewed locally in Brooklyn!). We were absolutely stuffed to say the least, but our bellies were happier than ever from the all the delicious burgers!

(67 Burger is located at 234 Flatbush Avenue by the Barclays Center)

When we arrived around noon, we were immediately greeted by a batch of delicious fries and a beer of our choice from Empire Brewing Company. When we saw who was serving us our drinks, we immediately recognized it was none other than McKenzie Mahoney of MMM Guide

The Burger Menu consisted of these four juicy burgers:

The Down Under Aussie Burger: Fire roasted and Pickled Beet Root, Pineapple Rings charred on an open fire, Malaysian spicy Pork Jerky, French Fries & a sunny side up Egg

The Chili Relleno Burger: Melty Jack Cheese, grilled Tomato Red Sauce, Poblano Chili dipped in a light Egg Batter and fried to a crisp!

The Pastrami Burger: Homemade Pastrami Spice crusted burger with Sauerkraut & Deli Mustard on a Pretzel Bun

Hippy Forager Burger: Beef Patty topped with a melange of wild mushrooms, spring onions, truffled tomato sauce & smoked gouda cheese sauce

Below are two of our favorites from the menu (for pictures of all the burgers, click here):

The event lasted for roughly 2 hours and towards the end we were asked to vote on our favorite burger. The winning burger was the Hippy Forager Burger and it is now the official 67 Burger for National Hamburger Month. We can’t wait to go back and try it again!
